REAP Intensive Training

An Exploration of Virtue

What is virtue and can it be taught?  These are questions that, as educators, we need to be able to answer. For, if we believe that our students can and should be virtuous then our vision for education must go beyond preparing students to be productive members of society.  Our mission has a higher purpose that will be evident in how we approach literature, how we converse with our students, and how we help to prepare them for the world.

Using On Reading Well by Karen Swallow Prior as our primary text, we will explore this rich topic by examining twelve virtues through the lens of several well-known books. Each week participants will discuss literary characters that exemplify each of the twelve virtues, contribute additional literary examples of the virtue being discussed, and develop questions that guide students towards virtue in class discussions.
