Is Homeland Security guilty of more over-reaching big government?
The US Department of Homeland Security’s official website states:
“Our founding principle and highest priority is to protect the American people from terrorist threats…”
It goes on to say, “The Department of Homeland Security was formed in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as part of a determined national effort to safeguard the United States against terrorism. The Department became the third-largest Federal department, bringing together 22 different Federal agencies, each with a role in this effort. We have taken significant steps to create a unified and integrated Department that will enhance our performance by focusing on: accountability, efficiency, transparency, and leadership development.”
But on Monday, August 20th, the US Department of Homeland Security visited Bluffton Wesleyan Chapel, home of Wesleyan Heritage Academy in Bluffton, Indiana and informed them that they could no longer have a church led Christian Academy on their campus, due to violations of building codes. Their state inspected and approved 11,000 square foot facility is 10 years old and sets on 7.35 acres.
The violation states that the church may have up to 250 persons in the educational wing on Sundays, Wednesdays, and special holidays. HOWEVER when teaching school, only 6 persons can be in the educational wing. RENEWANATION President, Melvin Adams spoke to Pastor Clark concerning their situation. An appeal is being filed with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. The church school is also filing for a variance.
State and locally elected officials are outraged by this intrusive and unwarranted action. “The problem is”, as one official said, “Homeland Security trumps our authority” and is a direct arm of the Federal Government, controlled by the White House.
So, is this just another saga in the ongoing culture war on Christianity in this country? Is the White House sanctioning such attacks on religious liberty?
The questions are many and the problems complex, but we know that God is over all. We are reminded though of Pr 29:2 which says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
A few more thoughts on the mission of the US Department of Homeland Security…
How is shutting down a private Christian school fighting terrorism?
How is it focusing on accountability, efficiency, transparency, or leadership development?
A further search on their website under “school safety“ generated nothing which could be related to this case but did indicate something quite to the contrary:
“To enhance school safety, the Department of Homeland Security offers funding, training, and resources for efforts such as providing money for emergency preparedness, training school bus drivers in security and hardening school buildings’ vulnerability.”
Please join us in praying for and supporting the leadership and families of Bluffton Wesleyan Chapel and Wesleyan Heritage Academy. This attack must not go unchallenged. Pray for state and local officials who are working to help. And pray for our nation and the election that is upon us.
